๐ A Night at Tempelhofer Feld: Where Berlin Breathes
One of my favorite places in Berlin isn’t a museum, a bar, or even the zoo. It’s a former airport.
Yes, you read that right. Tempelhofer Feld was once one of the busiest airports in Europe. Today, it’s a giant public park, and walking onto its endless runways feels like stepping into another world.
One summer evening, I went there with a few friends. We brought some food, a blanket, and of course a frisbee (because it’s basically a law in Berlin). The sun was slowly setting, painting the sky pink and orange. Around us, the air was buzzing with life:
Cyclists zoomed past as if the runway were made just for them.
Families grilled sausages on portable barbecues.
Someone was flying a kite so high it looked like it wanted to touch the moon.
And a guy nearby practiced tightrope walking between two lampposts — because, well, Berlin.
As night fell, the atmosphere shifted. The wide-open space turned into a sea of small lights: candles, lanterns, even glowing hula-hoops spinning in the dark. A group started playing guitars, and strangers sat down to listen. Suddenly, it didn’t matter who was from Berlin and who was just visiting. For a few hours, everyone belonged.
That’s what I love about this city: it transforms the ordinary into something magical. A closed airport becomes a community playground. A random evening becomes a memory you’ll carry forever.
Walking home later, I thought: Berlin is a city that constantly redefines itself — and it invites you to do the same.
