My Funniest “Zu Verschenken” Story in Berlin

My Funniest “Zu Verschenken” Story in Berlin

If you live in Berlin you quickly discover one of the greatest traditions of this city:

People leave literally EVERYTHING outside.

Not just books or old cups.
No, no.
Berlin goes full luxury:

  • sofas

  • mattresses

  • chairs

  • laptops

  • monitors

  • full kitchen shelves

  • entire IKEA catalogues

  • sometimes even things you should NOT legally pick up (we don’t talk about that)

Honestly, you can furnish an entire flat just by walking around Neukölln at night. It’s like a free outdoor IKEA, but with more chaos and more cigarette smell.

And this is exactly how my funniest “Zu verschenken” story happened.

How I Accidentally Ended Up in a Street Fight Over Free Junk

It was early morning — the kind of hour when only joggers, foxes, and questionable Berlin characters are awake.

I was jogging peacefully when I saw a box outside a building.
Classic Berlin signal:
FREE TREASURE.

Two other people were walking behind me, and I could feel that all three of us were thinking the same thing:

“Let’s see what’s inside.”

I can’t even remember what the box contained — probably something completely useless like a broken lamp or an expired fondue set — but the moment we approached it, the situation escalated FAST.

One of the guys suddenly stepped forward…

…and PUSHED ME.

Like — full disrespect.
For a free box of someone’s trash.

Sir.
Calm.
Down.

I was so shocked I didn’t even react. I wasn’t ready to physically defend a random box at 7 a.m.
I just froze, thinking:

“Bro… take the stupid box. I didn’t come here to fight for abandoned home decor.”

The guy won the “battle,” grabbed whatever was inside, and walked away like he achieved something great in life.

And me?
I stood there, traumatized and laughing at the same time.
Because honestly… who cares ?

What I Learned That Day.

  • A “Zu verschenken” box can turn into a war zone.

  • I am NEVER touching a free box again. I respect the chaos from a safe distance.
