Konsekutive Konnektoren in German

Konsekutive Konnektoren in German

Connectors That Express Results and Consequences

In German, konsekutive Konnektoren are used to describe the result or consequence of an action or situation. They answer the question:

What happened as a result?

These connectors are essential for clear communication, structured writing, and higher-level German (B1–C1).

What Do Konsekutive Konnektoren Do?

They connect:

  • cause (main idea)

  • with its result (consequence)

Unlike causal connectors (weil, da), consecutive connectors focus not on why something happened, but on what happened afterwards.

Most Important Konsekutive Konnektoren (Overview)

KonnektorBeispielBemerkung
so … dassEs war so kalt, dass ich zu Hause blieb. Most common consecutive structure; verb at the end in the dass-clause
sodassEs hat stark geregnet, sodass wir nicht rausgegangen sind.Very common in written German; neutral and factual
sodass (with comma)Der Zug hatte Verspätung, sodass wir den Anschluss verpasst haben.Always preceded by a comma
folglichEr hat nicht gelernt, folglich hat er die Prüfung nicht bestanden.Formal style; main clause word order
deshalbEs war spät, deshalb bin ich gegangen.Adverb, verb in second position
daherDie Straße war gesperrt, daher kamen wir zu spät.Slightly formal; common in news texts
alsoEs regnete stark, also blieben wir zu Hause.Informal to neutral; very common in spoken German
infolgedessenEr war krank, infolgedessen fiel er mehrere Tage aus.Very formal; often used in academic writing

Important Grammar Notes ⚠️

1️⃣ Subordinate vs. Main Clause

  • so … dass / sodass → subordinate clause → verb at the end

  • deshalb, daher, also, folglich → main clause → verb in position 2

2️⃣ Style Differences

  • Spoken German → also, deshalb

  • Written / academic German → sodass, infolgedessen, folglich

Typical Learner Mistakes

❌ Mixing weil with result
❌ Forgetting verb-final position
❌ Using deshalb like a subordinating conjunction

Correct:

Why Konsekutive Konnektoren Matter

They help you:

  • sound more fluent

  • write better texts and essays

  • structure arguments logically

  • score higher in German exams

Final Tip

If you master konsekutive Konnektoren, your German immediately sounds more precise and advanced.
