A cosmic visitor comes closer to Earth than the Moon

On 10 May 2026, astronomers in Arizona discovered a new asteroid: 2026 JH2. The celestial body is approximately 16 to 35 meters in size and belongs to the Apollo class. This group includes asteroids whose orbits cross Earth’s orbit.

On 18 May 2026, the asteroid passed Earth at a distance of only 90,000 kilometers. For comparison, the Moon is on average about 384,000 kilometers away. So we can say that the asteroid came more than four times closer to our planet than the Moon.

Despite this close approach, there was no risk of impact. Scientists observed the trajectory very closely and confirmed that the asteroid would pass Earth safely. That is exactly why the event was so exciting for many people: it was spectacular, but not dangerous.

Asteroid 2026 JH2 was also interesting for amateur astronomers. With a suitable telescope, it could be observed from Earth. Several observatories and online projects reported on the close approach. This turned the asteroid into not only a topic for scientists, but also a great example of how learners can learn German through current news and science topics.
