🌆 Why Is Germany’s Tallest Building in Frankfurt?

The tower was designed by Foster + Partners and completed in 1997. Instead of creating a conventional sealed office tower, its design incorporated natural light and green spaces into the structure.

The building became famous for its sky gardens — landscaped areas positioned at different heights throughout the tower.

So why isn't it Germany's tallest building?

Because there is an architectural distinction between a building and a tower.

Skyscraper rankings generally classify a building as a structure in which at least 50% of its height contains usable floor area. Telecommunications and observation towers don't meet that definition.

Absolutely — particularly if you are interested in architecture, photography, finance or modern Germany.

The best experience isn't necessarily standing directly underneath the tower. From there, its enormous scale makes it difficult to appreciate the entire building.

Instead, explore Frankfurt's financial district and then find a viewpoint where you can see the skyscrapers together.

The contrast is what makes Frankfurt fascinating: historic European streets, the River Main, church towers and a wall of modern glass skyscrapers all occupying the same city.

Germany isn't famous for building extremely tall.
