How much does a German course cost? 🇩🇪💶
If you're thinking about learning German, this is probably one of the first questions you'll ask.
And the answer can be confusing.
A German course can cost...
€0 — free apps, YouTube, public learning materials
€10–50/month — apps and self-paced platforms
€100–500+ — structured online courses
€200–800+ — group courses
€30–100+ per hour — private lessons
€1,000+ — intensive programs
So why is there such a huge difference?
Because you're not really paying for German.
You're paying for things around the learning process:
📚 Structure
👩🏫 Teacher access
🗣️ Speaking practice
✍️ Personal feedback
🎧 Learning materials
📈 Progress tracking
🎓 Exam preparation
⏰ Flexibility
And the most expensive course isn't automatically the best one for you.
Someone who needs structure and speaking practice may get enormous value from live lessons.
Someone who already speaks German every day but needs to fix grammar gaps might be better off with a self-paced course.
And someone who is just starting might not need to spend hundreds of euros at all.
So before asking:
“How much does this German course cost?”
Ask:
“What am I actually paying for?”
Then compare that with what you personally need to improve.
Because a €20 course you actually use can be more valuable than a €500 course you abandon after three weeks. 🇩🇪
How much would you personally be willing to spend on learning German each month?
