💳 What Happens When AI Gets Its Own Wallet?
Yesterday's AI could recommend a hotel.
Tomorrow's AI could book and pay for it.
That's a much bigger change.
AI agents are becoming capable of completing increasingly complex tasks across different services.
But eventually they run into a very human problem:
Someone has to pay.
Imagine telling your AI agent:
“Plan my weekend in Paris. Keep everything under €700.”
The agent could potentially:
✈️ compare flights
🏨 choose a hotel
🚆 buy train tickets
🎟️ book activities
🍽️ reserve restaurants
💳 pay for everything within the budget you authorized
Now the AI isn't simply giving advice.
It's becoming an economic actor acting on your behalf.
And suddenly we need answers to completely new questions.
🔐 How does the agent prove that you authorized it?
💶 How much money should it be allowed to spend?
🪪 How does a merchant know which human the agent represents?
🚫 Can you revoke its purchasing permissions instantly?
⚖️ Who is responsible if it buys the wrong thing?
And then there's another interesting problem:
AI agents don't sleep.
They can operate across countries, platforms and time zones 24/7.
Traditional financial infrastructure wasn't necessarily designed for autonomous software making tiny, instant, global transactions.
This is where technologies such as stablecoins, programmable payments and digital wallets become particularly interesting.
Imagine giving an agent:
👛 a wallet
💶 a €500 spending limit
📋 specific permissions
⏰ a defined time period
🔐 cryptographic authorization
Not:
“Here is my credit card. Good luck.”
But:
“You may spend up to €500 on transportation and accommodation for this trip, and nothing else.”
That could create an entirely new kind of payment infrastructure.
Today we mostly think about wallets as something people use.
But the next generation of digital wallets might increasingly be designed for software acting on behalf of people.
And perhaps one of the biggest users of programmable money won't be humans at all.
It might be AI agents.
