💸 Why Pay for Software When You Can Pay for the Result?

💸 Why Pay for Software When You Can Pay for the Result?

For the last 15 years, one of the most successful business models in technology has been simple:

SaaS.

Pay €50 per employee per month.

Get access to the software.

Then your employees use that software to do the work.

But AI creates an interesting question:

Why pay for the tool when you could pay for the result?

Imagine a sales company.

Today it might sell software for:

💰 €50 per salesperson/month

The software helps employees:

🔎 research companies
📊 qualify leads
✉️ write outreach
🔁 follow up
📅 schedule meetings

But now imagine AI agents can perform much of that workflow themselves.

Suddenly, the company doesn't necessarily need to sell:

“Sales software.”

It could sell:

“Qualified meetings.”

Instead of:

€50/month per user

the pricing becomes:

💰 €40 per qualified lead
💰 €300 per booked meeting
💰 €2,000 per acquired customer

The customer stops buying access to software.

The customer starts buying an outcome.

That's a much bigger change than adding an AI button to an existing SaaS product.

The entire business model changes.

Old model:

Software → Human does the work → Result

AI-native model:

Goal → AI does the work → Result

And therefore:

Old pricing:

Pay for the tool.

New pricing:

Pay for what the tool accomplishes.

This could happen across industries.

Recruiting:

❌ €100/month recruiting software
✅ Pay per qualified candidate

Accounting:

❌ €50/month accounting software
✅ Pay per processed invoice

Marketing:

❌ €500/month marketing platform
✅ Pay per qualified customer

Education:

❌ €30/month access to 5,000 lessons
✅ Pay for personalized learning, assessment or achieved competencies

Customer support:

❌ Pay for support software seats
✅ Pay per successfully resolved case

AI makes this possible because software is increasingly capable of performing the workflow, not simply helping a human perform it.

Of course, SaaS isn't going to disappear.

For many products, subscriptions and seat-based pricing will continue to make sense.

But a new competitor can now walk into the market and say:

“Don't buy our software. Tell us what you need done.”

And that may become one of the most important business-model shifts of the AI era:

Software-as-a-Service → Outcome-as-a-Service.

The companies of the 2010s sold us tools.

The companies of the 2030s may increasingly sell us completed work.
